What Is Love?

The Bible is one of the sources I turn to in need of answers. Below I share a few Bible verses related to love.

  • Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up;does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil;does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away (1 Corinthians 13:4-8 NKJV).
  • Let all that you do be done with love. (1 Corinthians 16:14 NKJV).
  • He who does not love does not know God, for God is love (1 John 4:8 NKJV).
  • But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection (Colossians 3:14 NKJV).
  • Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends (John 15:13 NKJV).
  • A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34-35 NKJV).
  • For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Galatians 5:13-14 NKJV).
  • For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16 NKJV).

The Month of February

On this time of year, it is good to think about and discuss the word love. As your children do that, let them exercise critical thinking and fine motor skills by implementing a Valentines Day Craft into your homeschooling. Celebrating this day is a perfect way of working on love activity with your child.

On Valentine’s day, there are a variety of options on how to celebrate. The 1st grade child might want to through a Valentine’s Day party. The 2nd grade child might want to write love letters or do independent work. Whatever your child is up to or inspired to work on, try work with their fun idea.

You might want to work together on classroom decoration, doing a writing activity, writing prompts or working on fun bulletin board ideas. A great way to center your work around love is to use paper hearts and candy hearts in your bulletin board kit. If you are working with preschool children, remember to use big hearts. Encourage them to draw their own heart on a peace of white paper. Allow them to draw in different shapes as they work on their fine motor skills. This kind of learning environment will make them thrive.

A fun way of adding some sweets to your Valentine’s Day is to offer your children a box of chocolates. It will surely make them excited. But most of all, be present and give them loads of your love. Your warm and loving presence will properly be the very best part theireducation!

There are many ways to create Valentines Day Bulletin Boards with your children. Here are a few fun ideas:

  1. “Love Bugs” Board:
    • Create cute bug characters with heart-shaped bodies.
    • Each bug can have a preschooler’s, or elementary student’s name on it.
    • Display the bugs crawling towards a big heart in the center with a message like “Our Love Bugs.”
  2. “Hugging Handprints” Board:
    • Trace and cut out handprints from colored paper.
    • Have each child paint or decorate their handprint.
    • Arrange the handprints in pairs, creating the illusion of hugging hands. Write each child’s name on their handprints.
  3. “Heart Garden” Board:
    • Cut out large hearts and attach them to the board to create a garden.
    • Each heart can have a child’s name and a personalized message or drawing.
    • Add paper or fabric flowers to enhance the garden theme.
  4. “Cupid’s Cloud” Board:
    • Create a large cloud in the center of the board with Cupid’s arrow shooting through it.
    • Attach heart-shaped cutouts with the children’s names and messages along the arrow’s path.
    • Add fluffy cotton balls to represent clouds.
  5. “Counting Hearts” Board:
    • Cut out a large tree shape and attach it to the board.
    • Create heart-shaped leaves for each child in the preschool or the early elementary student and arrange them on the tree.
    • The idea is to add hearts as the days go by, counting down to Valentine’s Day.
  6. “Friendship Quilt” Board:
    • Cut out squares of different colored paper and create a quilt pattern.
    • Have each child decorate a square with their name and a drawing or message.
    • Assemble the quilt on the bulletin board, symbolizing the unity of the homeschool family or the homeschool children.
  7. “Valentine’s Train” Board:
    • Create a train with each car representing the family of yours and other families you know of.
    • Attach heart-shaped wheels to each car with the children’s names.
    • The train can be “traveling” towards a big heart or a destination of love.
  8. “Reasons Why We love Each Other” Board:
    • Cut out hearts in different colors or use heart stickers and put them on a wall beside each other, forming a bigger heart.
    • Have each child write (or write for them) what they love about their friends.
    • The big heart that you and your children are forming together will symbolize how love gets us closer to each other.
  9. “Hugs And Kisses” Board:
  • Cut out shapes from a white paper that looks like the candy Hugs and Kisses.
  • Write the children’s name and add a photo of them on each candy.
  • Talk about how hugs and kisses make us feel while the kids taste the candy.

Remember to incorporate bright colors, whimsical designs, and elements that preschoolers and early elementary children can relate to. You can also involve them in creating some of the decorations, fostering a sense of participation and excitement. It’s great to engage older children too. Preteens are great helpers and designers. Let them design their own large heart and little hearts to give and share with the younger children. Furthermore, let them come up with ideas on how to create a Bulletin Board that fits the whole family. What is your family specialty? After you finish your art, use it as door decoration or hang it up on a wall where it’s visible for family and friends. This will foster and encourage further dialog about the Valentine’s Day and what love is all about.

The Most Important Thing

The most important thing you want them to learn is how love is practiced in the home. Me and my children read a book lately about the Berenstain’s Bears. It was a book about being polite and how politeness made their lives much easier. This simple book has impacted us to that degree that we refer to the book whenever we wish that someone shows us love and kindness. We also refer to it when we do not feel that someone in the family is being polite. We have been inspired to implement what we have learned from this book in our home. It is strange how a little picture book can impact our lives.

Being extra polite to each other and showing love in tone of voice and manner is so powerful. Showing children love and respect impacts them and us parents very much. Politeness inspires us to be polite back and show love and kindness in return. What we need to understand as parents is that we need to be role models when it comes to politeness and love.

“Children imitate their parents; hence great care should be taken to give them correct models. Parents who are kind and polite at home, while at the same time they are firm and decided, will see the same traits manifested in their children. If they are upright, honest, and honorable, their children will be quite likely to resemble them in these particulars. If they reverence and worship God, their children, trained in the same way, will not forget to serve Him also” -Child Guidance, p. 215.2 (Ellen Gould White).

“In the family, fathers and mothers should ever present before their children the example they wish to be imitated. They should manifest one to the other a tender respect in word, and look, and action. They should make it manifest that the Holy Spirit is controlling them, by representing to their children the character of Jesus Christ. The powers of imitation are strong; and in childhood and youth, when this faculty is most active, a perfect pattern should be set before the young. Children should have confidence in their parents, and thus take in the lessons they would inculcate.” -Child Guidance, p.215.3 (Ellen Gould White).

It is easy to live a mediocre life, not showing a little extra love and kindness. Showing love does not cost us anything, right? On the other hand it makes us and our children feel good. Love gives us the warm feeling that we are important, seen and valued. When you show your children a little extra love, you almost discern how their hearts melt and how happy and valued they feel by your behavior. Pour out loads of love and do not hinder it. Make your home the happiest place on earth where children love being around and create memories that will make them happy throughout their entire lives. Great memories are so important for children. Smile to them and show them that they are appreciated and loved. Give them that little extra love. It will make your day brighter too. As the Bible teaches, love is the most important thing. Nothing is more important.

1 Corinthians 13:13: And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

May this Valentine’s Day help us to remember that there is nothing more important than showing love to one another.
